The metric system: everything is a power of ten

The metric system — formally the International System of Units, or SI — was born of the French Revolution's desire for a rational, universal standard. Its genius is that units within a category scale by powers of ten and share prefixes. A kilometre is 1,000 metres; a centimetre is one hundredth of a metre; a milligram is one thousandth of a gram. Once you know kilo (×1,000), centi (÷100) and milli (÷1,000), you can move up and down any metric ladder by shifting a decimal point. There are no magic numbers like 12 or 5,280 to memorise, which is exactly why science and most of the world adopted it.

Metric also connects its units elegantly: one litre of water weighs almost exactly one kilogram and occupies 1,000 cubic centimetres. That coherence is what makes metric calculations so clean, and it's why even in imperial strongholds, science, medicine and engineering run on SI under the hood.

Imperial and US customary: history you can hold

The imperial and US customary systems evolved from centuries of human-scale references: a foot roughly a foot long, an inch the width of a thumb, an acre the land a team of oxen could plough in a day. The numbers between them feel arbitrary because they are historical, not decimal — 12 inches to a foot, 3 feet to a yard, 1,760 yards to a mile, 16 ounces to a pound, 14 pounds to a stone. Britain has largely gone metric but still measures road distances in miles and people's weight in stones; the US keeps customary units for everyday life while its scientists work in metric.

A subtle trap: imperial and US customary are not identical. The UK imperial gallon is about 4.546 litres, while the US gallon is 3.785 litres — a 20% difference that matters enormously for fuel economy comparisons. US and UK pints and fluid ounces differ too. Length: the conversions you'll use most

Length is the everyday battleground — height, screen sizes, distances, DIY measurements. The anchor fact is that one inch is defined as exactly 2.54 centimetres. From that single definition everything else follows:

A handy mental shortcut for driving: kilometres to miles is close to multiplying by 0.6, and the ratio (1.609) is remarkably near the golden ratio, so consecutive Fibonacci numbers approximate conversions — 5 miles ≈ 8 km, 8 miles ≈ 13 km. Weight: kilograms, pounds and stones

Body weight, luggage limits, shipping, cooking — weight conversions are constant. The key numbers: 1 kilogram = 2.20462 pounds, and 1 pound = 16 ounces = 453.6 grams. One point of confusion worth clearing up: mass versus weight. Kilograms and pounds as used in daily life measure mass, and everyday converters (including ours) treat them as directly interconvertible, which is exactly what you want for cooking, shipping and bathroom scales. The distinction between mass and force only matters in physics problems, not in your kitchen.

Temperature: the awkward non-linear one

Temperature is the conversion that can't be done by multiplying a single factor, because Celsius and Fahrenheit have different zero points as well as different step sizes. The formulas:

Worth memorising are a few anchors: water freezes at 0°C/32°F and boils at 100°C/212°F; body temperature is 37°C/98.6°F; a comfortable room is around 21°C/70°F; and the two scales famously cross at −40°, where −40°C equals −40°F. The forty-degree offset of the freezing point is why people used to metric find American weather forecasts so disorienting — 100°F sounds apocalyptic until you realise it's a hot-but-survivable 38°C.

Cooking: why "cups to grams" needs an ingredient

Here is the conversion that generates more frustration than any other, and the reason a naive converter gives wrong answers. A cup is a unit of volume (how much space something fills); a gram is a unit of weight. You cannot convert between them without knowing the ingredient's density — how heavy that ingredient is for a given volume. One cup of feathers and one cup of lead are the same volume and wildly different weights, and the same is true, less dramatically, of flour versus honey.

That's why one US cup is roughly 125 g of all-purpose flour but 200 g of granulated sugar, 227 g of butter, 340 g of honey and 236 g of water. A recipe that says "1 cup sugar, 1 cup flour" is not asking for equal weights at all. This is precisely why serious bakers weigh ingredients in grams: it's more accurate and repeatable than scooping cups, where how firmly you pack the flour can change the weight by 20%. Digital storage: the 1000 vs 1024 confusion

Ever bought a "1 TB" drive and wondered why your computer says 931 GB? Nothing is broken — it's two counting conventions colliding. Computers are binary, so historically a kilobyte meant 1,024 bytes (2¹⁰), a megabyte 1,024 kilobytes, and so on. Storage manufacturers, however, market capacity using decimal: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. When your operating system divides that marketed number by 1,024 three times to display gigabytes, you get about 931 — the same bytes, relabelled. Speed, area, volume and time: the everyday rest

Speed is the one drivers meet abroad: multiply km/h by 0.6214 to get mph, or mph by 1.609 to get km/h, so a 100 km/h motorway limit is about 62 mph and a 70 mph limit is roughly 113 km/h. Sailors and pilots add the knot (one nautical mile per hour, about 1.15 mph), which exists because a nautical mile maps neatly onto a minute of latitude.

Area trips people up because the conversion factor is squared: one metre is 3.281 feet, but one square metre is 3.281² ≈ 10.76 square feet. Forget to square the factor and you'll be out by a factor of three — a classic error when comparing apartment sizes or land. For land specifically, an acre is about 4,047 m² (0.405 hectares), and a hectare is 10,000 m², roughly two and a half acres. Mistakes that produce wrong answers

Converting cups to grams without the ingredient. The single most common cooking error — always pick the ingredient, because density is everything.

Mixing UK and US gallons, pints and ounces. A US gallon is 20% smaller than a UK one. Check which system a recipe or spec uses before converting fuel economy or liquids.

Treating temperature like a simple multiplier. You can't just multiply Celsius by 1.8 — you must add the 32-degree offset. Forgetting it is why quick mental conversions of weather so often feel wrong.

Rounding too early. In multi-step calculations, round only the final answer. Rounding 2.54 to 2.5 for inch conversions introduces a 1.6% error that compounds.
