The point is that it looks like language without being readable as language — so you judge the typography, the line lengths and the rhythm of the page rather than getting distracted by what it says. Frequently asked questions

What does lorem ipsum actually mean?
Nothing coherent. It is scrambled Latin derived from a first-century BC text by Cicero, with words altered and syllables dropped, which is why passages are almost-Latin rather than real Latin. That is intentional — it should not be readable.
Why not just type random letters?
Because random letters do not have the shape of language. Lorem ipsum has realistic word lengths and a plausible distribution of letters, so it produces the same visual texture and line-breaking behaviour real text will. Random characters do not, so your layout decisions would be based on the wrong picture.
Should I use lorem ipsum in a real design?
For early layout work, yes. For anything a client or stakeholder reviews, it is worth being careful: placeholder text has a long history of shipping to production by accident, and it also hides whether the design works with the actual length of your real copy.
Can I get it as HTML?
Yes. Choose HTML and each paragraph comes wrapped in <p> tags, or list items in a <ul>. Markdown output gives you blank-line separated paragraphs and dash-prefixed list items.
