Mahjong Solitaire: match the free tiles to clear the board

Mahjong Solitaire is the classic tile-matching puzzle: a stack of tiles is arranged in layers, and you remove them two at a time by matching identical pairs. The catch is that only 'free' tiles can be taken — a tile is free when it has no tile on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open. As you clear tiles, others become free, so the order you match in is the whole puzzle.

This version always deals a solvable board: it builds the layout by peeling matching pairs off in reverse, guaranteeing there is a way to clear every tile. It plays with a tap or a click, runs entirely in your browser, and needs no download — just calm, satisfying tile matching.

What makes a tile 'free'?
A tile is free — and therefore selectable — when no tile sits on top of it and at least one of its left or right sides is open. Blocked tiles are greyed out until they become free.
