Overview

Spirograph: hypnotic curves from simple gears

A spirograph turns a couple of numbers into astonishingly intricate patterns. It recreates the classic toy — a small gear rolling inside a larger ring, with a pen poked through a hole — but with sliders instead of plastic. Change the size of the ring, the size of the rolling gear, and how far the pen sits from the gear's centre, and the curve transforms: loops multiply, petals bloom, stars sharpen. Watch each pattern draw itself in a sweep of colour.

Behind the beauty is a single elegant equation (a hypotrochoid), evaluated point by point on a canvas in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, there's nothing to install, and you can download any pattern you like as an image. It's equal parts maths demo, art toy, and quiet time-sink.

Frequently asked questions

What do the three sliders do?
The fixed ring (R) is the big outer circle, the rolling gear (r) is the small circle rolling inside it, and the pen offset (d) is how far the drawing point sits from the rolling gear's centre. Their ratios decide the whole pattern.
Why do some settings make simple shapes and others make dense stars?
It comes down to the ratio between the ring and the gear. Simple ratios (like 2:1) make a few loops; ratios that don't divide neatly send the pen round many times before it closes, weaving dense, star-like designs.
Can I save my pattern?
Yes — press the download button to save the current design as a PNG image.
Is anything uploaded?
No. Every curve is calculated and drawn in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.
